The Captain & Tennille组建始于1970年代。Captain的本名为Daryl Dragon，是一名优秀的键盘手，同时是The Beach Boys的特约乐队成员之一，由于顶上微秃，平常老是戴着一顶船长帽子，所以有一绰号“Captain Keyboard”，大家都叫他Captain（船长）。Toni Tennille，除了歌喉不错之外，本身也是个作曲好手。1971年的时候，跟好友合作，写了一出音乐剧《Mother Earth》，到处巡迴演出。有一次他们的键盘手临时无法参加演出，在朋友介绍下，请到了当时正好没有事做的Captain，两人一见如故，合作愉快。音乐剧落幕之后，Captain还邀请她也加入The Beach Boys，一起巡演了一季。之后，他们返回到洛杉矶，以二人组合的名义在夜总会演出。
The Captain & Tennille跟A&M唱片签约之后，第一张唱片快要完声的时候，他们发现还需要一首节奏轻快、可以展现Captain键盘乐器实力的歌曲。听到Neil Sedaka在重返美国市场的专辑《Sedaka’s Back》中的《Love Will Keep Us Together》之后（当时Neil Sedaka只关注他被其他歌手抢先翻唱的《Laughter In The Rain》，而无暇理会推动《Love Will Keep Us Together》），感到正对胃口，于是立刻重新编曲，以最快的速度录製下来，再请老闆评鉴一下。果然，包括老闆跟公司所有的主管都一致鼓掌，决定就用它来当第一首主攻歌曲。唱片才一上市，马上就进榜，九个星期之后，歌曲就获得了首个Billboard冠军歌，并婵联了四周。由于他们还有着西班牙后裔的血统，所以又把这张专辑所有的歌曲用西班牙文重新录製一次，包括了《Love Will Keep Us Together》的西班牙语版，同样也打进了排行榜，使得他们成了有史以来唯一有同一首不同语言版本的歌曲同时在榜上的艺人。这张唱片还获得了第18届葛莱美奖的最佳年度唱片奖，同名歌曲也被电影《史密斯夫妇》作为插曲。
首张专辑成功后，他们结了婚。在《Love Will Keep Us Together》单曲成功之后，The Captain & Tennille还有一些单曲较受欢迎，如加入另一唱片公司后推出的《Do That To Me One More Time》曾获冠军单曲，以及为人熟知的却由Barry Manilow唱红的《I Write The Song》等等。
