王建国是东南大学1978届本科生，1985年免试攻读我的博士生。他学习刻苦努力、善于分析，先后跟我参加过河南博物院设计和冰心文学馆的建筑设计，此二项作品均得到好评并先后获得大奖。此外，他还参加和主持了常熟市政府人大和政协楼的设计，表现出相当的设计水平。
城市设计是城市规划的重要组成部分，是城市建设的重要环节，对城市建设起到指导和控制作用。
1985年，在王建国读齐康的博士生期间，我将他的研究方向定位于城市设计，他的博士论文的题目为《现代城市设计理论和方法研究》，后不断完善，出版了《现代城市设计理论和方法》和《城市设计》并被不少高校选用作为教材，十余次重印而且还获得出版方面的图书奖。《传承与探新（王建国城市和建筑设计研究成果选）》就是他的另一个研究成果。
